Facial fillers (otherwise known as dermal fillers) are injectable gels used to restore or add volume to the face. These gels are made from hyaluronic acid which secretly holds the key to smoother, plumped up skin and lips.
In fact, our own skin cells actually produce hyaluronic acid naturally in a bid to maintain moisture levels. In the skin hyaluronic acid attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated, appear more plump and smooth. But, thanks to ageing and environmental aggressors, to name just a few things our faces are exposed to on a daily basis, those natural levels tend to take a bit of a dip. Coupled with the other age related changes we see where the fat, muscles, bone, and skin in our face begin to thin, this loss of volume leads to either a sunken or sagging appearance of the face, fine lines, wrinkles, folds, and thin lips.
Injectable hyaluronic acid is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, facial folds, and to create structure, framework, and volume to the face and lips. The effects of injectable hyaluronic acid are seen immediately.
Fillers vary in density (thickness), which determines the area they can be used in and what they’re designed for, whether that is to provide lift or contouring, create symmetry, fill in lines or deep folds, or enhance a particular feature such as the lips.
The non-permanent range of JUVÉDERM® fillers have durable, long-lasting results (up to 24 months, depending on the particular JUVÉDERM® filler and the areas treated), but your body is able to break the filler down naturally and eventually the results will fade.
JUVÉDERM® is the world’s leading brand of hyaluronic acid facial filler. JUVÉDERM® facial fillers have the ability to integrate with your own facial tissue to get natural-looking results.
Each JUVÉDERM® facial filler is designed for a particular purpose, whether it’s to treat fine or deep lines/folds, restore facial volume for a lifting effect, or reshape and redefine the lips.
Our qualified medical aesthetics practitioner, Dr Evaghoras, may suggest several treatments from the JUVÉDERM® range to create a tailored treatment plan for you.
The JUVÉDERM® range of facial fillers is made using innovative technology to help you achieve natural-looking and long-lasting results (up to 24 months, dependent on the facial filler used and the area treated).
JUVÉDERM® facial fillers include the anaesthetic lidocaine, which can help reduce any discomfort you may feel during treatment. In addition, when we are treating the lips we also apply an anaesthetic to the skin before we begin, further reducing any possible discomfort.
Results are visible shortly after treatment. Most people return to their normal routine on the day they are treated, depending on treatment received.
Potential side effects associated with JUVÉDERM® products include temporary injection-site reactions such as:
These reactions may occur immediately or may be delayed, and can last for up to a week. Injection in the lip may cause more swelling and bruising due to the unique physiology of this area. As with any injection, there is a risk of infection, but our careful sterile technique helps to dramatically reduce this risk.
It is not unusual to have some swelling or redness of the area. It is also possible to see bruising, to have itching and some tenderness. These side effects are temporary and usually resolve within a few days. Bruising may take 7-10 days to fully resolve. Swelling will usually be worse the next morning.
As with all biological systems, it is not possible to give an exact time frame, however, for most of our patients, the effect of their filler injections lasts from 9-12 months. In some areas the effects may be visible for up to 24 months
Botox is a protein derived from naturally occurring Botulinum Toxin.
Botulinum Toxin is a muscle relaxant which may help treat a number of conditions within the body. It works by partially blocking the nerve impulses to any muscles that have been injected and reduces excessive contractions of these muscles. In the case of chronic migraine, Botox may block pain signals, which indirectly blocks the development of a migraine.
Anti-aging injections can temporarily improve the appearance of:
A thorough medical consultation is performed to find out if you are suitable for any of the treatments.
Wrinkles are part of the ageing process. They can be attributed to sun damage, the effects of gravity and muscle contraction resulting from facial expressions such as frowning and laughing. Wrinkles due to the effects of gravity represent natural changes seen in the facial skin and the underlying fat, muscles and bones.
Wrinkles caused by muscle contraction such as frown lines, forehead lines and crows' feet, might be improved with anti-aging injections.
Also known as hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating can be a troublesome issue. Botulinum toxin injections can be used to decrease sweating of the underarms and palms of the hands.
Botox is injected directly into the muscles that cause the wrinkles, using a very small needle. Several injections are usually needed at specific sites, depending on the area treated (see diagram 1). When used to treat excessive underarm sweating, local anaesthetic is applied to the skin first.
It is normal to feel a little discomfort when the liquid is being injected into the skin but this does not usually last long.
There may appear to be a ‘bubble’ where the injection has been placed which will disperse within an hour or so.
Botox usually takes effect 2 weeks after treatment on the face. Its effects generally last for approximately 3-4 months. When injected into the muscles that are responsible for expression wrinkles, it gives the face a more relaxed and smoother appearance. Sometimes longer lasting effects (9-12 months) are seen after treatment of excessive sweating. When a gradual fading of treatment effect is noticed you may return to have another treatment.
It is not uncommon to have a mild headache after Botox® injections. Potential side effects associated with Botox® include temporary injection-site reactions such as:
No severe complications after cosmetic use of Botox have been reported in the literature. As a derivative of a natural product, Botox is broken down safely in the body. If you are pregnant, or trying to conceive, then Botox is not suitable
Bruxism is the medical term used to describe unconscious tooth grinding or clenching while awake or asleep. Grinding teeth, especially over long period of time, can have a negative impact on the enamel of the teeth, as well as the muscles of the jaw an face. It is not uncommon to see chipped teeth, flattening of the tooth surfaces in those who grind. Chronic bruxism may also contribute to recurring headaches, facial pain and even migraines.
A gummy smile is seen when a lot of gum shows above the upper teeth when we smile. This can be due to the underlying bone or over activity of the upper lip. In either case, Botox injections can be used to improve the appearance seen. In some cases, placing a little filler in the upper lip also helps to improve the appearance of the smile.
Injections with Botox can help to reduce tooth grinding and jaw clenching, and therefore may help relieve the associated pain and discomfort. There are night guards available too, which we might advise you to wear.
A small amount of botulinum toxin is injected in the masseter muscle which is found at the sides of the face. The muscle weakens, which helps control the involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. Voluntary movements, such as chewing and facial expressions, are not effected by the treatment.
Results start appearing approximately 2 weeks after the injections, with the final result seen at 6-8 weeks. The results can last for up to 6-8 months.
